While there are quite a few games that are seeing new life on the Switch, there are some games on the Wii U that never even saw life outside of Japan. Nintendoland, Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3D World, Splatoon, Mario Maker, the HD Zelda remakes, Captain Toad, The Wonderful 101, Xenoblade Chronicles X…the list goes on. But, that doesn’t mean that the Wii U was without some awesome games. For a multitude of reasons, people just didn’t flock to the system like they did with the Wii before it, leaving system sales and general interest in the device in the trash. Jeremy Parish is hosting this electronic eulogy, joined by collector Chris Kohler and, making their Retronauts debut (at long last) Eric Caoili from Tiny Cartridge. Given its longer life and greater success, we have a lot more suggestions for the 3DS than the Wii U, but even Nintendo's second-greatest mistake has games worth playing in 2022 and beyond. Unlike Sony, Nintendo's giving consumers a reasonable amount of advanced notice, long enough for us to gather a team of crack experts to let you know which digital exclusives (or just plain hard-to-find titles) are worth picking up before the end comes. While we can laugh about what's "retro" and what's not, the fact is these platforms have aged out of relevancy to their corporate owner and, as Sony threatened to do last summer, Nintendo will be pulling the plug on these digital marketplaces in the near future.
